A combination workshop and challenge to see who can build the most creative device using only a single button for user interaction.

In a world where our interaction with technology is dominated by qwerty keyboards, multi-functional hand-held devices, motion-detection controllers and touch screens what becomes of the lowly, single button? Is it still possible to find inventiveness in simplicity?

The One Button Challenge attempts to answer the question – setting this simple limitation as both a physical and creative boundary.

This October, Openlab Workshops and Cybersonica present a One Button Challenge as part of the Abandon Normal Devices (AND) Festival, Manchester, UK.

In the run-up, we are offering both a 5-week workshop in London and an intensive two-day workshop in Manchester on how to design and build your own One Button Device.

We trust in your imagination to create things which will amaze, surprise, entertain, inform, humour and perhaps even offend. So go on, ask yourself what your button would do… and take up the challenge!

For more details and background to the project check the One Button Devices Workshop at Openlab Workshops.

Call to ‘Make It Yourself’

August 20th, 2010

Cybersonica with Openlab Workshops and Manchester Art Gallery present:
Make It Yourself
openlabworkshops.org
www.manchestergalleries.org

CALL FOR EXISTING WORKS

Make It Yourself is an exhibition of inventive Arduino and DIY electronic-circuitry projects to accompany the major solo exhibition Recorders by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer at Manchester Art Gallery between 18 September 2010 to 30 January 2011.

See http://www.manchestergalleries.org/whats-on/exhibitions/index.php?itemID=73 for more information.

A rapidly expanding community of people worldwide is taking advantage of new, cheaper technology and a growing pool of shared knowledge to make things for themselves – useful things, clever things, silly things, unique things. Make It Yourself is a ‘small but perfectly formed’ show of a handpicked half-dozen of these hand-made devices.

We are now accepting submissions of existing Arduino and DIY electronic-circuitry projects from artists, hobbyists, hackers, DIY musicians and anyone interested in making things for themselves wishing to exhibit their work as part of Make It Yourself.

We are looking for pieces that reveal and demonstrate:

  • unique devices born out of imagination or happy accident
  • how everyday artifacts actually work
  • custom-made tools born out of a frustration that nothing else quite does the job
  • modified consumer products that now do something their manufacturers never conceived of.

Overall we are looking for inventive projects that demonstrate a wide range of function and form, simplicity and complexity, humour and intent.

We expect creators of selected works to provide a project ‘info pack’ of design schematics, component lists, code and step-by-step assembly instructions.

Deadline: Monday, 13 September 2010.
Notification: Friday 17 September 2010.
Download: application PDF (right-click and “Download Linked File” or equivalent)

MORE ABOUT MAKE IT YOURSELF

The exhibition will also feature creator ‘making as performance’ sessions, public ‘hands- on’ workshops, ‘Instructables’ guides, a collation of local and online resources and a bit of ‘hacking’ and ‘modding’.

A small selection of exhibition contributors will be invited to Manchester Art Gallery in October 2010 to ‘remake’ their piece in the exhibition space – the process being filmed as a time-lapse for later playback throughout the exhibition and photographed for the exhibition ‘Instructables’ guides. These ‘remade’ versions will be added to the exhibition space for visitors to interact with.

Openlab Workshops will run a number of practical workshops at Manchester Art Gallery inspired by this exhibition and aimed at a range of audiences.

Once the exhibition has opened, a secondary and local ‘Call for Modification’ will collate and realise ideas which hack and modify the original works – as a practical demonstration of the ongoing and unpredictably enjoyable evolution of communally shared ideas and projects.

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Recorders and Make it Yourself are supported by Arts Council England. Cybersonica’s contribution to Make It Yourself is supported by the PRS Foundation – www.prsformusicfoundation.com.

DIY Music Day

August 20th, 2010

Saturday, 14th August, 10am-5pm
World Museum, William Brown Street, Liverpool
soundnetwork.org.uk

Explore the world museum through music. Make thumb pianos, listen to instruments from all over the world and perform music with DIY instruments. No musical experience necessary!

DIY Music Day aims to engage the public with the World Museum’s collections in new ways through great art and music. All the artists involved embody a DIY spirit of play and exploration; subtle, scary,  challenging, weird, unfinished spiritual and fun.

Artists were hidden in and amongst the museum galleries to allow the public to explore and be surprised; and others play key performances in the Atrium and outside the building

Featuring: Apatt, Anthony Seydu, Beat Life, Mike Carney, Stuart Carswell, How Why DIY, Norman’s Organs, Joe McLaughlin, Sam Meech, Megaphone Orchestra, Music Boxes from the museum collection, Noise Club.

DIY Music Day is a co-production between National Museum Liverpool, SoundNetwork and the PRS for Music Foundation’s New Music Plus Northwest Scheme. Curated and produced by Ross Dalziel & Donna Lyon.

Swap Meet at Big Chill 10

August 20th, 2010
Photos by PixelPusher, Tim Simpson Photography and The Northern Light Painters.

Friday, 5th – Sunday, 8th August
Swap Meet in The Enchanted Garden, The Big Chill, Eastnor Castle Deer Park, nr. Ledbury, Herefordshire

After a successful first event at The Barbican in February, Swap Meet headed to The Big Chill Festival this summer! A nod to the infamous Roadium Open Air Market swap meets of the 80s, where Dr Dre distributed his mix-tapes including lyrics from artists LL Cool J, 2 Live Crew and samples from Kraftwork.

Extending contemporary mix-tape and bedroom studio culture Swap Meet facilitates live and physical face-to-face exchange of material between artists operating from different genres enabling experimentation and infinite collaging possibilities.

Swap Meet invites a broad spectrum of artists and organisations to the Big Chill. From pioneering contemporary classical record label and classical music super club promoters Non-Classical, to youth music organisations including Urban Development and Rising Tide. With a good dose of sonic arts and experimentation provided from organisations including MFA Computational Studio Arts at Goldsmiths University, FACT and Cybersonica.

InProcess:ing and Madlab are pleased to welcome Evan Raskob – founder and organiser of Openlab Workshops – making art and music with open source/free software around London and the UK.

This condensed one-day version of the regular Openlab 5-evening course will be a relaxed but project-focused introduction to programing in Processing and interactive art and design in general. We will spend the bulk of the day on basic methods of working with code, general workflow and feeling your way around the Processing environment, along the way building some small projects and gaining inspiration from art, design and technologies such as Wii remotes, RFID, OSC, video and more. The material is flexible, based on the needs and wishes of the people attending.

UPDATE: We’re really pleased the workshop is fully subscribed – but do get in touch if you’ve missed out and are disapponted – info [at] cybersonica.net (a stand in contact address ’til the cybersonica.org mailserver gets sorted). We are hoping to run other Processing and related workshops in the future and we’d be keen to find out if there’s any interest.

“Processing is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to program images, animation, and interactions. It is used by students, artists, designers, researchers, and hobbyists for learning, prototyping, and production. It is created to teach fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context and to serve as a software sketchbook and professional production tool.”

InProcess:ing focuses on the Processing language, environment and community as the vehicle to support and encourage creative collaboration and meaningful exchange between a diverse group of practitioners, creatives and hobbyists. It aims to create a playful, experimental space and a supportive framework in which people can share their work, realise new technological ideas, be inspired, challenged and stretched.

Join us at the launch event to see Processing in action, meet other interested and like-minded people and find out more about the project and how to get involved.

Participate…

Bring along Processing sketches you’re working on for our informal ‘open-laptop’ session between 7-8pm.

Contact us if you’d like one of the 10 minute ‘show-and-tell’ slots between 8-8.30pm to informally present a ‘work-in-progress’ to the group – or sign up at the event itself if a space is available.

Share links and a 100 word review of some of your favourite Processing work.

Special Presentation…

Learn how to make a 3D scan with a projector, camera, and Processing using a technique and open source tools – openprocessing.org/visuals/?visualID=1995 – developed by Kyle McDonald. Kyle will be making a telematic presentation about the history of “structured light” scanning, one of the techniques used for Radiohead’s recent “House of Cards” video. He’ll go over the basic theory on how it works, work through the process of capturing a bust in 3D and exporting it to Blender for further experimentation and finish up with some discussion on where to take the technique next.

Kyle McDonald is a media artist currently based in upstate New York. Kyle is heavily involved in the open-source tech scene, with work ranging from alternative sensors and interfaces to experimental noise instruments and immersive large-scale interactive installations. He is also a contributor to other projects like Open Frameworks, Processing and Arduino. Kyle is currently completing his Master of Fine Arts in Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Madlab is a  A 1000 sq. ft. former shop in the Northern Quarter of Manchester – a space you can get together with like-minded individuals and work on your urban gardening, crochet, hacking, programming, media arts, filmmaking, animating project without worrying that you’re in a library, coffee shop, pub or other unsuitable venue. We know hackers and craftspeople need work space and may need to get down and dirty – we also know sometimes you need a quiet area to present and show works to your peers – so Madlab is there to support both – and the interactions that result.

PRICKIMAGE vs MURPHY

For Kinetica Art Fair ’10 and the unique Musion Eyeliner 3D holographic projection system Cybersonica have selected a line up of exceptional audiovisual talent drawn from previous Cybersonica Socials – our irregular live showcase – and AV Lab ’08 – our week-long residential creative & practical workshop.

The Kinetica Art Fair provides collectors, curators, museums and the public with a unique opportunity to view and purchase artworks from leading international galleries, artist’s collectives, curatorial groups and organisations specialising in kinetic, electronic and new media art. Kinetica’s aim through the fair is to popularise artists and organisations working in these genres and to provide a new platform for the commercial enterprise of this field. Alongside the fair there will be special events, screenings, tours, talks, workshops and performances. These events will involve some of the world’s most eminent leaders in the fields of kinetic, electronic and new media art.

An annual celebration of electronic music, sonic art and audiovisual experimentation, Cybersonica is a key destination for anyone interested in the theory and practice of how new technologies are shaping and changing the way musicians, digital artists, audiovisualisers and creative software developers make and present their work. Now in its eighth year, its rolling programme of collaborative events and projects brings together a vibrant community of sonic and audiovisual innovation, nurtures new talent and showcases the freshest and latest work in the field.

Cybersonica have been regular collaborators with Kinetica Museum since the co-curated SoundWaves sonic art exhibition in 2007.

Widely recognised as pioneers of VJ culture, D-Fuse <www.dfuse.com> are a group of London based artists founded in the mid 90’s by Michael Faulkner who explore a range of creative media – from art, architecture, photography and film to live AV performances.

Scanone <www.myspace.com/scanone> creates intelligent and sharp beat structures reinforced with heavy bass, emotive synth lines and sci-fi fx… a sound that borders a myriad of underground genres. His work has featured on numerous short films, animated sequences, TV adverts, soundtracks, scores and live performance for events.

Voice controller Kristi <www.myspace.com/vckristi> delivers edgy electronic grooves and live, gutsy vocal FX merged with the evolving and surrealist imagery of Oddscene <www.myspace.com/oddscene>.

PRICKIMAGE vs MURPHY is a fresh collaboration fusing the the kinetic and potent visuals of moving image artist Barry Gene Murphy <www.barrygenemurphy.com> with the irreverent, full of fantasy, humor and intrigue visuals of Prickimage <www.prickimage.com>.
